Party conventions these days are essentially stage-managed beauty contests because they no longer serve to select the nominees for president. That decision is made during seemingly endless primaries and caucuses, and the delegates merely rubber-stamp the choice. The challenge for the Democrats this year is to showcase Barack Obama and persuade the voters that he is presidential material, a task that appears more difficult today than just a couple of months ago.

The new discharge permit issued by federal regulators for the Upper Blackstone Water Pollution Abatement District a week ago brought a flood of criticism from municipal officials, members of the state Legislature and our congressional delegation - with good reason. The stringent new discharge limits on phosphorus and nitrogen seem to be based not on science but on bureaucratic convenience.

Don’t hire flaggers; end police detail abuse

The governor is right to address wasteful spending on the state-controlled roadway projects, but replacing police officers with flaggers on roadways with less than a 45-mile- per-hour speed limit doesn’t address the real cost issues. This plan is merely a smoke screen to protect the special interest groups.
