I was watching a baseball game - the Red Sox, of course - with my two little grandchildren, and the announcer mentioned a charity that the team supports. Jimmy, 5, said, “Oh, it’s for a charity.” My daughter said, “What is a charity Jimmy?” Jimmy said, “It’s where people help other people who don’t have enough money for food and clothes for their children.”

Humane Society actions are questionable
It’s ironic that American Bible Society president Paul Irwin is so supportive of the “animals and religion” program promoted by the Humane Society of the United States. (”Religious support for Humane Society goals,” Telegram & Gazette, June 12). Mr. Irwin was recently fired by the Bible Society’s board of directors because the company he hired to develop its Web sites was heavily involved in the online world of hard-core pornography.

Fire chiefs trying to close loophole in fire-safety rules
As Worcester fire chief and the recently appointed president of the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts, I am asking for public support for a very important bill that the association is seeking to have passed. The lifesaving bill would close a critical loophole in the state’s fire-safety regulations.
