Make no mistake: The theory that Gov. Deval L. Patrick’s absence from the Statehouse last week to pursue a book deal contributed to the crushing defeat of his casino proposal could not be farther off the mark. There’s no way the measure would have come to a vote, or even come out of committee, had not House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi first been certain of its defeat.
