Readers opine on state’s casino gambit
I agree 100 percent with Dr. Clyde Barrow of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and the Telegram & Gazette editorial (”Casino revenue projections don’t add up,” Sept. 21) on the issue of casino gambling in Massachusetts. Looking at this as a mathematician, who votes in every state and federal election, the numbers do not objectively add up. I’m afraid the governor’s learning curve is below average in this regard, as I feel it is on several other state issues.

More to education than MCAS scores
This is in response to the editorial “It’s Working” (Telegram & Gazette, Sept. 17), regarding improved MCAS scores in 2007. I would like to consider an alternative assessment. It’s true that with various added resources there’s been improvement. However, I believe this is being done without regard to other important aspects of education.

Give to charities, not people on street
Although I live only three blocks from where I work (near City Hall), I sometimes dread the walk home because I know I am going to be harassed by someone to give them some change. That would not be an imposition; however, it is the principle of what they are doing that I don’t like. They are most likely being dishonest and if nothing else they are being manipulative in order to attain money for cigarettes, alcohol or illicit drugs.
