City elections 2007 promise status quo
When I read the initial story on Worcester’s recent preliminary elections at an Internet cafe in Budapest during a recent visit to Hungary, I stared with disbelief at the list of district council candidates who did, and did not, make the cut. Later it turned out the list, prepared in advance as a test template to determine space needs, was printed by error. When I eventually caught up with the actual results, they did not make much sense, either.

The first airplane flight across the Atlantic Ocean
May 22, 1927, is a date I still remember. It was a hot, sunny day and we were planting corn on our farm in Leicester. Suddenly we heard a faint celebration commotion from the direction of Worcester - whistles, bells, etc. My older brother listened for a moment and then exclaimed “Lindbergh!” Lucky Lindy, flying alone, had made it from New York to Paris. And for years I believed that he had been the first man to fly a plane across the Atlantic.

Bush administration writing a ‘fairy tale’
President George W. Bush implemented the “Troop Surge” in Iraq hoping that an additional 30,000 American troops would help reduce violence in Iraq and buy some time for national reconciliation. The surge has marginally reduced violence in Iraq and the Iraqi government isn’t closer to national reconciliation than it was before the surge.
