TRAILER STASH - “Dude, I’ve Got A Buzz” (Possible 2008 Oscar Contenders)
Welcome to a brand new weekly feature here at WorcesterMovies.com, “Trailer Stash.” As a remedy to Monday morning, we will offer up a quintet of trailers for your information, entertainment and misappropriation of company time while at work. We will do our best to theme them appropriately, though if we’re really tired from watching movies all weekend, they might be just five trailers that we want to share.Make sure you have QuickTime installed, as most of the trailers we share with you will be in that format (yes, we are Mac loyalists).

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE - Rock Heads Spark #1 Spot For ‘Game Plan’
We will leave the sports metaphor to you, dear reader, when we say that the PG-rated Disney comedy The Game Plan defeated the odds-on favorite, The Kingdom (coming in #2). The only other new movie that charted this week was the dramatic comedy, Feast of Love, just out of the Top 10 at #11, though the Beatles musical Across the Universe did crack the Top 10, after a couple weeks in release. The rest of the list looks pretty much like last week’s, with last week’s top two, Resident Evil: Extinction and Good Luck Chuck, being bumped to #3 and #4, respectively. Late summer hits The Bourne Ultimatum and Superbad fell off the list after 8 weeks in release.

OFFSIDE [PG]
A couple of Jafar Panahi’s earlier films were banned in his home country of Iran, but went on to great international acclaim. With this winner of the Silver Bear at Berlinale in 2006, Panahi has gotten pretty smart and made a comedy in which the political dangers are submerged in a way that circumvents censure at home, yet manages to make his point loud and clear. The film takes a lighthearted look at how teenage girls try to infiltrate a soccer stadium for a big match against Bahrain in the qualifying round of the 2006 World Cup. Forbidden to attend by Government decree to protect them from the swearing and bad behaviour that is expected of the men, they are keen soccer fans and inventive with disguise. Still, some get caught, and held in a makeshift pen until after the game. This is where Panahi sets the center of […]

Humane treatment for wildlife is preferred
While the views of those who attended the recent hearing on the future of wildlife management in Massachusetts may have been evenly split (”Sportsmen, activists square off on wildlife control, hunting,” Telegram & Gazette, Sept. 18), a recent statewide poll demonstrates that Massachusetts residents strongly favor policies that protect wildlife.

Lyons family not told of NASA ceremony
An article appeared (Telegram & Gazette, Sept. 12) titled, “Firefighters in ‘99 blaze saluted,” focusing on the dedication of the Massachusetts Fallen Firefighters Memorial at the statehouse in Boston. In a crowd of thousands, I watched the unveiling of this touching bronze statue symbolizing the sacrifice of our fallen firefighters.

Proponents of casinos have created an illusion
We, the people of the commonwealth, demand a lot from our state and towns. Just to keep up with inflation, these vital services are ever more costly.

Credit scores and car insurance don’t mix
On Sept. 21, the Telegram & Gazette ran an article about insurance rate deregulation (”Auto insurance reform plan debated”). In it there were comments that credit scores could be used in the underwriting of policies. The attorney general has come out and said that after one year this should be phased out.

Time to wake up and switch from oil use
It’s been a great ride, but it’s time to wake up from the “American dream” before it becomes a nightmare. While many people are worried about the slumping housing market, I’m most concerned about the one resource upon which our entire way of life depends: cheap oil. We’re about to start running out and it may be too late to do anything about it.
