It’s pretty funny when someone you know doesn’t get the joke, it’s even pretty funny when you’re the one that doesn’t get the joke…that is as long as it’s every once in a while. In the rare case when you run into someone who never gets the joke, it’s simply not that funny.
Well I suppose there are instances where this would be funny, like when you’re recounting the story to your girlfriends, or when you’re laughing at this person along with other people who get the joke. But when it’s just the two of you, that is when it starts to get old real quick.

Nicholas D. Kristof argued that the United States should lead rather than allow uncertainties about global warming to stall action (Telegram & Gazette, Aug.17). I agree with Mr. Kristof and with earlier opinions by columnist Thomas L. Friedman, but important arguments been have missed.

I am writing to correct a serious misstatement in your editorial, “Attitudes changing on clean, sustainable energy” (Telegram & Gazette, Aug. 25). Perverse incentive

With the Midwest trying to recover from devastating rains and the Gulf Coast still struggling to recover from the lethal one-two punch delivered by hurricanes Katrina and Rita two years ago, the threat of flooding to life and property has been much in the news. Yet, policymakers show little inclination to address one of the factors that contributes to the devastation: a federal flood insurance program that encourages people to build and rebuild on barrier islands and floodplains.

A prudent plan

The auto insurance reforms unveiled by Insurance Commissioner Nonnie S. Burnes this week would introduce much-needed competition into Massachusetts’ highly regulated system while guarding against discriminatory practices and unfair pricing. Consumers, and safe drivers in particular, should welcome the change.
