Better Questions Beget Better Answers

I am getting tired of journalists asking the wrong questions. Listening to the radio the other day, I was heartened that my local public radio station was investigating the problem of the “achievement gap” between Blacks and Hispanics on the one hand and Whites and Asians on the other. That problem – stated as I just have stated it – was then treated in a way that completely ignored the question that so glaringly demands to be asked: Why are Asians so successful in American schools? Why have they succeeded? Why have so many Asians been able to use the public schools to better their socioeconomic position in society? That’s a question that needs to be asked.
