Cabinet’s Interior in need of repair
Sen. Ken Salazar, the Colorado Democrat who is President-elect Barack Obama’s choice for secretary of the interior, will inherit a department riddled with incompetence and corruption, captive to industries that it is supposed to regulate and is far more interested in exploiting public resources than conserving them.

More military waste
The most memorable scene in the 1981 action melodrama “Raiders of the Lost Ark” comes at the very end when the ark, which turns out to be the ultimate weapon of mass destruction, is wheeled into the depths of a vast military warehouse - presumably to be lost for another millennium or two.

Readers are urged to take in homeless pets
I work with several dog services, and dogs are coming into rescue agencies due to owners losing their homes and moving to places that don’t accept pets.

End rigid requirements for certification
The Brookings Institute advises “ending rigid requirements for teacher certification that impede hiring” as a major step to boost weak schools. Eliminating this process would enable school systems to hire educated professionals who want to leave other careers, and it would put these people immediately into the classroom. I often wondered what our economy would do if Americans stopped using credit cards. I know the economy would collapse and I’ve been proved right.

Storm puts focus on basic joys of life
Here are some things that I discovered or rediscovered during the big ice storm: Patience, portable radio, friendship, great neighbors, the importance of a family’s love, old-fashioned hurricane lanterns, getting help, giving help, cooking on a camping stove, and grilling food on the grill after dark. How good life can be without television or the computer. We should value our heat, electricity and water. We should be thankful for being able to buy a generator when they were hard to find, but th

Wilkerson didn’t deserve endorsements
I think that Gov. Deval L. Patrick and Mayor Thomas M. Menino should not have backed the candidacy of state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson, running for re-election. She, as a public servant, was and is an unethical person. We have read of her past problems and recently realized how truly biased she is.
